Volunteer Opportunities

For something in your area go to - www.civc.ca

The Learning Centre for Georgina has two unique opportunities for students who live in Georgina, Queensville, Sharon, Holland Landing, or Newmarket.

First, we are looking for student artists who are interested in helping to build/redesign our Motorcycle Show Booth for the two Motorcycle Shows in Toronto (January 2007 and April 2007).

Second, we are looking for students who are interested in helping at the January 5th, 6th and 7th Show in Toronto.  What a better way to earn easy hours for your volunteer activities :-)

If you are interested, please email me at bus600@gmail.com and put MOTORCYCLE SHOW in the topic.

Alcohol and Youth
Filed under: Topic of the Day, Pet Peeves

This has nothing to do with the fact I enjoy volunteering with MADD every summer (Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers) for their annual barbeques.  What this has to do with is the need (in our schools) to have victims and victims families come in and scare the ‘6′ out of kids at a very vunerable age about drinking and the consequences.  There is NOTHING I hate more than people who do not control their consumption of alcohol, or people who do not respect other people’s need NOT to be around them when they have been drinking.

Oh yeah, I’ve had a few in my day BUT I know my limit.  Now that I am older and wiser (not to get confused with the people who make whiskey) I have ZERO TOLERANCE for the stupidity that goes on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Yeah, so, it’s the weekend… big deal !  That’s a good time to stay sober and get things done, or have fun and actually remember it.

What’s worse is the adults who are teaching their children to be drunken destructive idiots.  If you don’t yell in front of your kids and don’t spank them, then what the hell are you doing by drinking booze, smoking pot, and/or getting addicted to pain killers in front of them?  Go to rehab. There are a lot of free programs out there folks.

I remember, for my thesis, I started a project called “The Trio of Doom”.  It was about three drunken friends who used to get together far too often (beyond just weekends) to imbibe in their favourite pasttime.  I will have to revisit that paper and see where things have gone right or wrong since then.

The Last Word here is this:  I lost my best friend and lover to booze, so I don’t want anyone in my life whose priority is alcohol over Life.

Mispronounciation of common words
Posted by: Bus Driver @ 8:55 pm

Misuse of the english language really riles me.  Here is a classic example of two words people mispronounce constantly.

Orient - some people like to say orientate or orientated or orientating

WRONG.

It’s just ORIENT, ORIENTED, or ORIENTING.

Regardless - why do people put IRR in front of this word? NOT NECESSARY.  Irregardless is not a word. And it IRRitates me when they do.

If you have a word that gets used, abused, or misused… go ahead and add it.

Getting Credit Where Credit is Due
Filed under: Topic of the Day

Kids just don’t get enough credit these days.

Mr. Hick let me know that credit is only available to students if you are exceptional or well liked by the administration.  Well what is this? A popularity contest? Don’t kids have enough to challenge them socially and economically that they have to get it, double-barrelled, from the school administration.

“5″ (see 600-talk)

It’s is definitely time for the folks at the board of education (note from author: why capitalize people like this when it’s self-importance that counts with them?) to get off their weeny ponies, and be real.

Second note from author: Yeah, found out later they were just putting him on… give me a break !!!  It’s obvious to me they did it because they actually like Mr. Hick… silly you!

Friend or Foe

How do we determine if someone is a friend or foe?

That simply is determined by how you define those terms.

Friend as defined in The Concise Oxford Dictionary, is no more concise than the infinite way you can describe a true friend.

Foe, on the otherhand, is simply stated as: an enemy or opponent.

There is a saying: “You can count your true friends on one hand”.  Remember that always, especially if you lose a finger or two.

The First Day 2005

Who knew one kid could lead to this much attention

Finding new stops on your route the first day can be frustrating enough, but what is worse than miscommunication?  Little Miss thought she was supposed to get off at her “home” stop, so that’s where I let her go.  I instructed two dependables to walk her home and I closed the doors.  Something didn’t feel quite right, but I knew my dependables would get her there.  Two stops later, I’m at the daycare and they’re asking for Little Miss. “Oh crap”, I thought, now I have to go find her.  Of course I wondered why I hadn’t received the information from the school, or a note from the parent at the very least… Why do Parents do that? Leave things to chance?

So I found our missing Little Miss, took the rest of the kids home, and hiked it back to the school.  Parking in the pick-up loop, Little Miss and I disembarked and walked together around to the front of the school.  I saw the three police cars, as we proceeded to enter the front doors.  I saw a blond woman running toward us and asked Little Miss if that was Mommy.  Yeah, that was Mommy all right with the three cruisers.

I now have very little tolerance for Staff Sergeants who wield their power inappropriately on unsuspecting school bus drivers.  Who needs to go into detail after knowing the other seven cruisers had already left the school area?

Was that much panic necessary? Probably, but not the attitude I received.  Thank goodness for a great school principal who came to my defense.  I will always remember his kindness over their inane and misplaced sense of power.

First Day 2006

I love getting the better of the kids.  My bus, bus wins.  Like the cards being stacked in a casino (in favour of the house of course).

So I’m just about to enter the first school driveway, first run of the day, the first day of school 2006. I glance up and notice in my mirror my passenger windows are all steamed up.

As I make the turn, I yell: “OK, all you grade nines… (the bus gets quieter)…If you’re in grade nine, I want you all to stop breathing right now. You’re fogging up my windows!!! “.  The old crowd laughed and someone behind me exclaimed: “That’s because they are all nervous”.

We all had a good laugh, I felt good.  It’s going to be a great year.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me.

Yeah, we talk a whole different language where I ride.

In definable terms we know this:

5 = the “F” word

6 = the “S” word

We don’t say “Fag” because you never know who you’re going to offend, and we won’t pound the “20″ out of anyone, because you might as well put them out of their misery and shoot them.

Respecting others means you watch your language on the bus
